We trim the 420 km lab figure to about 295 km for highway driving with air-conditioning, then hold back 15% in reserve. Honest caveat: Ghana’s public fast-charging network is still sparse outside Accra, so on long trips confirm charging before you set off.

How durable is an EV in Ghana’s heat and roads?

Range is only half the worry. The other half is whether the battery will fade or leave you stranded. Here is what the evidence actually shows.

Batteries last longer than people fear

A 2026 study by Geotab of more than 22,700 electric vehicles found batteries lose about 2.3% of their capacity a year on average, keeping roughly 81.6% after eight years, often outlasting the rest of the car.

Warranties back it up

Most makers guarantee the battery for around eight years or 160,000 km and promise it will still hold at least about 70% of its capacity. Hyundai and Kia go further, up to ten years.

Fewer parts to fail

An electric motor has far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel engine. There are no oil changes, timing belts or exhaust systems to wear out, so routine servicing is usually simpler and cheaper.

One honest caveat for Ghana: consistent heat degrades a battery only about 0.4% a year faster, but leaning heavily on high-power fast charging is harder on it than steady home or destination charging.
